To celebrate the film 2001: A Space Odyssey’s title year, a special modeling exhibition was held at the international exhibition hall at Porte de Versailles in Paris from the 7th through 16th of April 2001. Called "2001 l’odyssée des maquettes (2001: A Modelers Odyssey)," it showcased dozens of astounding examples of the modelers' art.
As a companion piece to the exhibit, the French science fiction modeling magazine Dixième Planète (Tenth Planet) issued a special edition covering many of the creations displayed in the show. Both the exhibition and the magazine were produced by Jean-Marc Deschamps (Deschamps is also the author of our new release on the movie 2010: The Year We Make Contact).
Subjects covered in the magazine included not only all of the vehicles from the film, but also many of the characters (including "Moonwatcher") in both stand-alone and in full diorama presentations. The models were created from both existing kits and amazing scratch-builds. The articles cover the techniques used to improve and enhance existing kits by correcting mistakes (e.g. the infamous "Moon Bus" front windows in the Aurora kit), adding details, and "weathering" the surfaces.
Below are a few examples of the more than 80 pages worth of this grand tribute to a true cinematic masterwork. As a bonus, click here for a short QuickTime video (about 5 MB) showing the actual exhibit.
